The Peninsula girls tennis team suffered a setback against Corona del Mar last week, but has bounced back in a strong way.

The Panthers defeated Mira Costa (14-4) last Wednesday and San Marino (13-5) on Monday.

Ryan Peus and Kina Tanagawa swept their singles matches and Amanda Sharng won two matches.

Earlier this season, Peninsula defeated Palos Verdes in the finals of the Golden State Classic. The Panthers won the first edition of the Golden State Classic in 2015 and then finished sixth last year.

There are a couple of big dates on the horizon for the Panthers. Next Monday, the third-ranked Panthers visit top-ranked Campbell Hall and Oct. 5, they visit Palos Verdes, who is ranked fourth.

Redondo girls volleyball challenged

One night after going five sets with Mater Dei, Tommy Chaffins and the Redondo girls volleyball team were back in the same situation against Marymount.

Both matches ended with Redondo losing in five sets.

The Sea Hawks are ranked third in the latest CIF-SS Division 1 poll, ahead of Marymount and behind Santa Margarita and Mater Dei.

Mira Costa is 10th in Division 1. Palos Verdes is sixth in Division 2.

Peninsula boys water polo makes a jump

The Peninsula boys water polo team was unranked in the CIF-SS Division 4 poll on Sept. 18. This week, the Panthers are up to No. 2, with Redondo at No. 3

The Panthers edged the Sea Hawks, 9-8, last week.

Mira Costa will host Redondo Thursday and visit Peninsula next Tuesday. The Mustangs are among the top 20 teams in Division 1 and 2.

Open Divisions created in L.A. City

The L.A. City Section recently announced that baseball, boys volleyball and softball will implement an Open Division beginning this spring.

The votes were overwhelmingly in support of the addition. Baseball only two of the 67 votes were for no. Boys volleyball (75-9) and softball (78-4) also had wide margins of support.

In the summer, the section announced the creation of an Open Division for football, starting this season.

Honor for El Camino College’s Mason

El Camino College linebacker Mike Mason earned SCFCA Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Mason became the first El Camino player this season to reach double digits in tackles (11), accomplishing the feat in Saturday’s wild 48-45 loss to Saddleback.

El Camino returns to action Saturday at Bakersfield at 6 p.m.

Mansel receives offer

St. Bernard’s junior forward Romelle Mansel has received an offer from Cal State Fullerton.
